Mark Simon’s column in the Daily Journal of Jan. 30 in regards to Sheriff Corpus and based on anonymous staff in her office confiding to Simon her failure to hold timely management meetings, attend meetings of the rank-and-file, and a general lack of leadership struck a chord with me.
If her obvious lack of leadership and ability to run an efficient, transparent office, among other transgressions, leads me to ask why did she receive such overwhelming support of certain city and county politicians, not to mention so-called gender and race activists? Was it because she is Latina and a woman? Because it sure doesn’t seem to be because she was the best qualified choice. Which then begs the question, did these supporters assume because she just “checked the box” of who she is (Latina and a woman) who sold them a bill of rhetoric about how she will change the “good old boy” network and run a “totally transparent” with an “open door” policy, she could/would do so? The back peddling of her former supporters suggests yes, they drank the Kool-Aid and blindly endorsed her without really investigating if she was at all qualified to be the sheriff. And now we have an embarrassing, expensive effort to oust her on our hands.
Your points are very well made. This situation has to be brought to a close soon as it's a threat the moral and performance of the San Mateo Sheriffs Department which voters depend on. Just another example of why our one party Democrat government doesn't work.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Wackerman, and for the great questions. I’d say Corpus was a DEI hire. People get the government they voted for and in this case, San Mateo County got what they voted for – to our detriment, especially our wallets.
