The Cambridge Analytica leak shouldn’t have been unexpected. Facebook doesn’t charge for signing up; it doesn’t ever require money from its users. So why is Facebook so big? It’s simple: They sell your personal data. When someone decides to post something about themselves, that information gets harvested and spit out to others who then use it to their advantage. A company that collects people’s personal data to then sell to others is not primarily interested in keeping your data secure, so why do people expect it to?
What we want is simply not possible — it’s like asking the fox to guard the hen house. When the hens are nowhere to be found, well, it’s not rocket-science what happened to them. We need to treat Facebook the same way: It should not be the one to regulate itself. The Cambridge Analytica leak just further reveals what Facebook really is.
