Regarding the 18% homeless statistics, could the problem be not that there is no housing, but the exorbitant rents people cannot afford to pay?
In South San Francisco, the rent for a one-bedroom apartment is between $2,906 and $3,368 per month as of January 2025. In other more affluent neighborhoods, it is up to $5,000 and up.
Airbnbs are buying up properties as well as corporations investing in the available properties thus making renters forever rent slaves.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Scafani, but if the cost of buying and maintaining houses is exorbitant, why wouldn’t rents become exorbitant? Just wait until speculators begin buying up the burnt out land in Southern California. I’d recommend perhaps buying stock in some of these speculators because it’s highly likely they’re going to make multiple pretty pennies. And now, thanks to Newsom, rebuilding can ignore a few environmental laws. Guess those environmental laws were only there to impede progress?
