Trying to design the ideal form of government is an old game. It goes all the way back to ancient Greece and probably farther.

Both Plato and Aristotle took a crack at it. But it is Polybius we need to thank today. Polybius was the first to write that a mixed government made up of separate “branches” might be stable enough to survive the cycles of collapse, revolution, civil war and mob rule that had plagued the ancient city-states since the beginning of time. The authors of the U.S. Constitution didn’t make up that idea all on their own. They got it from Polybius, by way of some Enlightenment philosophers like Montesquieu.

Thank you Tom for a quite, actually fascinating, educational article. I believe you could have done without your closing statement in light of Biden's slew of executive orders. To wit 'but the struggle between the competing components always pulls them back into balance" threw that argument out of kilter. The Legislative component is now seemingly beholden to the Executive Branch. Is that what half of the voters in the last election wanted? Let's pray that the Judicial Branch puts a stop to Biden's unconstitutional overreach.

Dirk,

Can you refresh my memory about when you were complaining about Trump's unconstitutional overreach like you are complaining about Biden's?

Taffy - two wrongs do not make one right. However, you must admit that the avalanche of executive orders that he has and had on his desk are beyond the pale. All of them supposedly forward by the AOC gang and other ultra Bernie types. Trump issued a single executive order on his first day.

Trump issued them for four years, thus the large number of orders needed on the first day to get rid of them before anymore damage is done.
