Teachers in the Burlingame School District received a much-needed and well-deserved pay increase, which is key to attracting and retaining talent and maintaining quality classroom sizes. Because of the vagaries of the state’s school finance rules, Burlingame has some of the lowest funding of all San Mateo County schools, but some of the best teachers, administrators, parent groups and test scores. It’s a quality institution made that way by care and effort of the Burlingame community.
The current administration decided to invest in its workforce to ensure stability and quality. Now it’s up to the Burlingame community to lend a hand for this generation and for future generations. Measure GG is a modest ask, it will generate $3.6 million a year through a tax per parcel of 14 cents per building square foot, capped at $2,500 per parcel, and $25 per unimproved property. This way, owners of larger structures will pay more.
The people of Burlingame have a history of supporting its schools, whether it be through its important Burlingame Community Education Foundation or its other school measures such as Measure L, a parcel tax passed a decade ago and set to expire in 2030. Recent bonds have been put to good use, with revamps and restorations that are so important in maintaining a high-quality learning environment for all students. And the current district administration has been responsible with its funding in every aspect.
This is a time of transition for the Burlingame School District, a time in which it is striving to maintain its high-quality workforce after revamping its facilities. Measure GG would establish further local control of its funding, while ensuring stability and creating a path toward even better days. Vote yes on Measure GG.
Vote NO on Measure GG and any other tax increases proposed by Burlingame. Remember, Burlingame teachers recently received a raise of more than 7%. Remember, these raises also count towards their pensions and benefits.
Also, isn’t Burlingame building a new city hall? I expect it isn’t cheap. Didn’t Burlingame recently give their union workers a 15% raise? The government can always make up reasons to ask for more money but when it comes time to account for the money, they won’t bother. Instead they’ll propose another tax increase.
Vote NO on this Measure and if you have voter remorse, wait for the next election cycle and you’ll see new measures looking for more of your money. Money from this measure will mostly, if not all, go to paying raises and ever increasing pensions and benefits. I assure you teachers will be looking for more raises when they see more money from this measure.
We are already paying a parcel tax in Burlingame that expires in 2030, so this will be a second one on top of that one. And looking forward to 2030 when they try to add another parcel tax by disingenuously saying "it won't raise your taxes!" since it will just replace the old one. Starve the beast and vote NO.
