On Sunday, November 24, 2024, Fernando Mario Teglia, aged 83, passed away suddenly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo and Renata (Benedetti), and an infant brother, Renardo. Fernando was born in San Francisco on January 23, 1941, and spent his early years in Colma where his parents owned a flower farm. His family moved to San Bruno where Fernando attended elementary school, Cappuccino High School, and later the College of San Mateo, Coyote Point. He was accepted into and graduated from the University of California School of Pharmacy in San Francisco as a Doctor of Pharmacy. Early in his career he met the love of his life, Roberta (Cerri) and in 1966 they were married and were inseparable for the next 58 years. They established their first home in South San Francisco.
Together, they welcomed three sons, Marc (Kelly), Matthew (Jan), and Steven (Alisa). Four grandchildren followed, Jessica, Gianna, Madeleine, and Emily.
During the Vietnam War Fernando served in the US Army as a Medic attached to Fort Sam Houston in Texas and subsequently Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco.
While living in the Bay Area, “Nando”, as he was known, was active in professional, local civic, and social organizations, including The Sons of Italy, the South San Francisco Italian American Citizens Club, the Italian Catholic Federation, Young Men’s Institute Council 32, and The Boy Scouts of America.
Fernando served as a Clinical Doctor of Pharmacy at Children’s Hospital in San Francisco for over twenty years. He later opened the pharmacy department at a new facility in Bakersfield (Mercy Southwest Hospital). The family relocated to Bakersfield, while retaining family and professional ties in the Bay Area. During this time, he served as a clinical pharmacy professor for the UCSF School of Pharmacy and as president of the Golden Empire Chapter of the California Society of Health System Pharmacists. Upon his retirement Fernando spent time traveling with Roberta and family and took much pleasure in the activities of his beloved grandchildren. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the fellow members of the local chapter of SIRs and the Dante Club.
Fernando was a friend to all, known for his smile and warmth. He was a humble and honorable man who loved his profession and was warmly regarded by those he worked with. He was a loving son, husband, father and grandpa. He was a man of great faith and a devoted Catholic. He was the rock of our family and is terribly missed.
We are grateful for the compassion shown by the Alameda County Fire & EMS, Station 35, and the medical staff and bereavement personnel at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland. We would also like to thank Father John Direen of the Diocese of Oakland who kindly administered the appropriate last rites.
A Rosary (Duggan’s Serra Mortuary, Daly City) and funeral Mass (All Souls Catholic Church, South San Francisco) will be offered with interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. A subsequent memorial will be held at St. Francis Church in Bakersfield. Further Information may be obtained from Duggan’s Serra Mortuary at duggans-serra.com.
