SAN JOSE — San Jose’s airport is getting ready to celebrate the opening of its new terminal later this month, but budget woes mean the gala will be downsized affair.
Officials at Mineta San Jose International Airport had hoped for a black-tie event, with sponsors chipping in a half-million dollars. But with weeks left before the June 24 gala, they’ve only raised about $230,000.
The $150-a-ticket event for the Terminal B opening will now feature self-serve food stations and business attire.
Kyle Edwards, an executive of the gala organizer, California Host, says it will be in keeping with the times since Silicon Valley corporate sponsors have shied away from making six-figure contributions.
Some also questioned a splashy event in light of the airport’s $32 million debt payment and drop in passengers and flights.
