STOCKTON — Newly released court documents show that the Tracy woman who admitted murdering her daughter’s playmate sent frantic text messages to her relatives during the search for the little girl.
Melissa Huckaby had checked herself into a hospital for swallowing a razor blade, as police searched for 8-year-old Sandra Cantu in April 2009.
According to search warrant affidavits released Monday, Huckaby sent dozens of messages to relatives while in the hospital, asking for updates in the search for Sandra. She told them that she hoped the girl would be found alive and was praying for the family.
Sandra’s body eventually was found stuffed in a suitcase pulled from an irrigation pond.
Huckaby eventually pleaded guilty to kidnapping and murdering her. She’s serving a life sentence.
