An elderly San Carlos woman was fatally struck by a minivan while crossing El Camino Real in Belmont early Friday morning, according to police.

The collision occurred at El Camino Real and Fifth Avenue around 6:45 a.m. The victim, 83, was walking with a walker on the south side of the intersection where there is no marked crosswalk — the north side includes a crosswalk and pedestrian crossing signs — when she was hit, said police Capt. Patrick Halleran. Officers found the victim down in the road, she was treated at the scene and then taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced deceased, according to a press release.

Crashes aren't accidents. Saying "accident" makes it wrongly appear as though crashes are inevitable rather than preventable. Many intersections in the city are not enforceable 24/7 and have many crashes. Harbor/ECR, Ralston/ECR and Davy Glen/ECR are examples of dangerous intersection with frequent collisions. , The majority of auto fatalities and injuries could be prevented if it were not for drunk driving, distracted driving, poor road conditions, speeding, more than one lane in a direction, or negligence by one of the drivers.
