After overseeing a the remodel of City Hall and the Police Department and navigating a budget through tumultuous economic waters, Belmont City Manager Jere Kersnar is resigning to pursue "other employment opportunities."
Kersnar, who's been the small city's skipper since 2000, is pursuing other employment opportunities. He could not be reached for comment.
"I leave knowing that the city is on the right track," Kersnar said in press release.
Assistant City Manager Dan Rich will step in until the City Council designates an interim manager at its Aug. 10 meeting.
The news came as a surprise to Councilman Phil Mathewson, who learned of the resignation just yesterday when he got the press release.

"[Kersnar] guided us through the downturn of the economy with as little shock as possible to our system," Mathewson said. "We've maintained our services until now."
Before coming to Belmont, Mathewson said Kersnar worked on the staff in the desert city of Cathedral City.
"One of the things he loved about the desert was the bird watching," Mathewson said.
Kersnar also served as chair of the San Mateo County City Managers' Association.
