fter five years as Belmont's Planning and Community Development Director, Craig Ewing announced his resignation to pursue a job with the city of Palm Springs.
Ewing accepted a position as director of planning services for Palm Springs. His last day with Belmont is Aug. 12.
Ewing is the third top staff members to leave the city in the last two years. Last month Dan Rich resigned as interim city manager to become Sunnyvale's city manager. Rich was promoted in Belmont when former city manager Jere Kersnar left after a scuffle with the City Council.
Ewing has been the planning director for Belmont since 2000 and oversaw a number of projects, including the lot merger program, the city's visioning program, an economic development strategy and opening of the permit center.
"By taking the job in Palm Springs, with a population of 42,000, Ewing hopes to work on larger planning projects," he said yesterday.
He is working with Belmont Interim City Manager Jack Crist to choose a temporary replacement.
"Craig is a solid municipal planner who has made a fine contribution to this community. I hate to see Craig leave and I reluctantly accept his resignation," Crist said in a prepared statement yesterday.
