A San Mateo man was arrested after police alleged he assaulted another man with a gun and was later found with drugs and an unserialized firearm over the weekend.
Officers were called to the 1600 block of Roberta Drive at 3:08 p.m. Sunday after reports of an assault, the San Mateo Police Department said. The victim told officers he was struck in the mouth with a firearm during a verbal dispute before being punched and kneed while on the ground.
Police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Jose Alvaradovasquez. Officers spotted him entering a vehicle near the scene and stopped him as he drove away. During the traffic stop, police said they found suspected methamphetamine and two rounds of 9 mm ammunition.
A search of the area uncovered an unserialized firearm, a magazine and more ammunition hidden in bushes about 10 feet from where Alvaradovasquez had first been seen.
Alvaradovasquez was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, possessing a loaded and unserialized firearm, possessing a controlled substance while armed, concealing evidence and driving under the influence, among other suspected crimes.
