A San Bruno woman was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of human trafficking while her husband, suspected of the same crime, is still at large, police said.
Maria Delosreyes, 45, and her husband Ricardo Delosreyes, 55, allegedly convinced a woman in her early 20s to move from the Philippines to their home in San Bruno on the promise of a job and a better life, said police Lt. Ryan Johansen. But neither promise came to pass.
“Once she arrived here, they put her into a life of servitude,” Johansen said.
Under threats of deportation and “consequences” for her family in the Philippines, the victim was forced to work 14 to 17 hours a day, seven days a week for almost no compensation, Johansen said.
The victim served as the couple’s housekeeper; she took care of their mentally disabled child and also provided janitorial work for a dental business owned by one of their friends.

“The consequences were financial and there were vague threats. I don’t know if [the victim’s] family was in physical danger, but she felt no choice but to continue her life [in San Bruno] for fear of consequences for the people she loved,” Johansen said. “The couple ushered her around and didn’t allow her any social life or breathing room.”
The victim slept on the floor of the couple’s home and was not allowed to eat with the family.
Delosreyes and her husband’s alleged crimes were reported to police in 2016 and the two fled the country shortly after. Detectives recently discovered that Delosreyes had returned to San Bruno, secured a warrant and brought her into custody without incident. Her husband remains outstanding and is believed to be in the Philippines, Johansen said.
Johansen said the victim’s current whereabouts are unknown, adding that a roughly two year investigation has not led them to additional victims.
“Servitude-oriented human trafficking is not common in San Bruno, but it’s more widespread than we thought,” Johansen said.
