A 35-year-old San Bruno man was sentenced to a year in county jail Tuesday after he pleaded no contest to felony domestic violence for strangling his girlfriend in November of 2016, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Out of custody on a $500,000 bail bond, Carlos Carranza allegedly appeared in court Tuesday with his girlfriend and both said they have been working on their relationship and are better for it. Carranza was also sentenced to three years of supervised probation and 104 hours of domestic violence training and will receive 65 days credit for time served, according to prosecutors.
On Nov. 9, 2016, Carranza is said to have attacked the woman in the San Bruno apartment they shared and carried her to the bedroom, where he dropped her to the ground and allegedly strangled her. When he got off the woman, he is said to have yelled at her, saying he warned her not to do this to him and asking her if she wanted him to be an animal because he could be an animal, according to prosecutors.
The woman called 911 and Carranza is said to have fled and hid in the trunk of his car, which was parked in the building’s lot. Police officers responding to the scene found the woman with redness on her wrist and upper chest and her voice was strained and showed changes of pitch, according to prosecutors.
Carranza was found in his car and is said to have yelled profanities at the police officers and told them they would have to shoot him. They forcefully removed him from the car, and Carranza allegedly resisted arrest, according to prosecutors.

Carranza’s defense attorney Valery Nechay said in an email they were hoping for a result that provided for an alternative to incarceration and focused on individualized treatment, but believed Judge Jeffrey Finigan issued a fair sentence. She added they were pleased Carranza was provided with a self-surrender date allowing him to see his children for a summer visit and deal with some of his medical issues.
“He has made mistakes but his shortcomings are not beyond correction,” she said in the email. “He has made self-initiated efforts to seeking counseling and improve himself.”
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said he felt Carranza’s sentence was an appropriate punishment based on his conduct and his remorsefulness. He noted the case demonstrates how prevalent domestic violence is and the importance of counseling.
“It is a reminder that domestic violence remains a scourge in our communities,” he said. “It is not something that just belongs to a particular economic class, it crosses all levels.”
