One inmate died by suicide Oct. 21, the other Oct. 20 because of an undiagnosed brain tumor, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office reported after an in-custody death findings investigation was released Thursday.
The District Attorney’s Office conducted the investigation into the two incidents that took place at the San Mateo County Jail.
Correctional officers found Peter McLaughlin, 64, unresponsive in his cell at around 4:15 a.m. Oct. 20. They began life-saving measures but he was pronounced dead by Redwood City firefighters and medics. It was determined he had the brain tumor, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The next day, Oct. 21, at around 9:18 a.m., correctional officers found Ronald Simmons, 34, unresponsive in his cell. They began life-saving measures but he was pronounced dead by Redwood City firefighters and medics. It was determined he died by suicide, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“The well-being and safety of those in our custody is our highest priority. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. McLaughlin and Mr. Simmons,” Sheriff Christina Corpus said in a press release.
