The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board will meet tomorrow in San Carlos to approve the leasing of seven rail cars from Amtrak for Caltrain service to Pac Bell Park during the 2001 baseball season.
Board staff estimate that the additional cars will be needed for weekday post-game and weekend pre-game service, with ridership of around 2,500 to 3,000 round trips per game expected.
The lease agreement to be authorized at tomorrow morning's meeting specifies that each car will be leased for 32 days starting March 29 at $500 a day, with an option of extending the lease at $300 per car per day for the remainder of the park's baseball season. The lease would cost $112,000 for the minimum period, with a maximum total cost of $249,000.
The Joint Powers Board, which includes representatives from San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, is also expected to authorize a fund transfer agreement to receive $4.97 million in state funds for the Caltrain Express project.
The board voted to request the funds for the preliminary phases of the project from the California Transportation Commission in November 2000 under Gov. Gray Davis' Traffic Congestion Relief Program.<
