A two-story 24-Hour Fitness Super-Sport club with a rooftop basketball court has been approved to operate in Redwood City’s industrial area just south of Woodside Road.
The City Council approved the 47,152-square-foot project at its Monday night meeting. The item was on the council’s consent calendar.
The project includes the consolidation of three parcels at 1050 Broadway/1093 Charter St., including an old warehouse that is the former home to Free-Flow Packaging International, which manufactured bubble wrap and polyethylene foam. The company closed in 2010 and the building has been vacant since.
Developer SunCap Property Group will demolish the existing warehouse built in the 1950s and replace it with a two-story facility with an open air basketball court on the roof.
It will feature a lap pool, steam room, locker rooms, sauna, spa, towel service, personal trainers, weights, cardio equipment, group exercise rooms and a space for children.
It will be the fitness giant’s 56th facility in the Bay Area.
The proposal first came to the city in April 2013 and was approved by the Planning Commission in May 2013.
The project site is zoned for industrial uses and is within walking distance of Summit Preparatory Charter High School.

The club will be approximately 20,000 square feet on two floors.
It will be open up to 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
Up to 225 members could use the facility at one time. The club would employ up to 70 workers.
The proposed project would develop a 272-space surface parking lot, and would include 11 bicycle racks. The project would be landscaped with shrubs and groundcover, accent planting, bioretention planting, 67 shade trees and 17 accent trees, according to the project description.
The developer anticipates completion of all improvements in mid-2015.
The nearest 24-Hour Fitness to the new one in Redwood City is on Industrial Road in San Carlos. It also has two clubs in San Mateo, one in Millbrae, one in Daly City and one in Pacifica.
Note to readers: This story has been changed to remove reference to a rooftop basketball court that is no longer part of its plans.
