A former airport police officer initially accused of fondling two women at the San Mateo Tower Records store last December will be sentenced today after pleading no contest to lesser charges.
Michael David Crockett, 59, admitted one felony count of concealing a handgun and one misdemeanor assault charge in return for a promise of no prison time and the dismissal of sexual battery charges. Crockett, who has represented himself in court, made the bargain Feb. 22 to avoid trial a week later on two misdemeanor counts of sexual battery and the handgun charge. If convicted on the original charges, Crockett faces up to a year in jail for the misdemeanors and more than three years in prison for the felony.
Crockett is a former San Francisco International Airport police officer who now resides in Reno, Nev. He was arrested the afternoon of Dec. 9 after two women accused him of fondling them at the Hillsdale Shopping Center record store.
Crockett reportedly approached the two women inside the store, touching the chest of one and the crotch of the other. One woman screamed and her boyfriend pushed Crockett, prosecutors said. When police arrived, they reportedly found a loaded handgun in his pocket.
He has a 1994 misdemeanor conviction for carrying a loaded gun. The prior offense makes this new possession charge a felony. The sexual battery charges were misdemeanors because the alleged touching happened over the women's clothing.
He has been in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail. He returns to court this morning for a sentencing hearing.
