A smoldering fire at a recycling center in Brisbane was extinguished early Wednesday morning, more than 24 hours after it started, according to San Francisco fire officials.
The fire at the Recology facility at 501 Tunnel Ave. was extinguished at 3:48 a.m., fire officials said. The cause of the fire has been declared “spontaneous combustion/accidental” per fire officials.
The fire started at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, sending a plume of smoke visible in the southern end of San Francisco, according to recycling center spokesman Robert Reed.
The smoke forced San Francisco Unified School District officials to send students home from Visitacion Valley Middle School, according to district officials. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a warning about the smoke.
The recycling center is used to sort construction and demolition debris, primarily consisting of wood, sheet rock and scrap metal, Reed said. One pile of debris started smoking early Tuesday morning.
The metal structure was not at risk of catching on fire and the building is not used to store any aerosol containers, Reed said.
Dear Bay City News Service - This report is not informative other than the fact it took about 24 hours to completely put out the fire. We don't know what burning sheet rock smells like, but we know what burning wood smells like. And unless it was fiber board filled with glue, that smelled like a lot of plastics and rubber. There has to be a lot more to this story. And we neighbors intend to get more details. We're working on a meeting with RecologySF looking for answers to Q's about 1) how to prevent these types of fires, 2) how to put them out far sooner if they happen, 3) how to notify neighbors what's going on in a timely manner, 4) how to provide more timely updates if a fire takes many hours to put out as this one did.
