A fight with tree stakes on the 200 block of North Eldorado Street in San Mateo left two victims, a destroyed city tree and a damaged car on Monday afternoon, though police were able to provide few details on the incident because witnesses were still being interviewed Monday night.
At least three San Mateo police cars and a South County fire truck responded to the block. Police handcuffed a man with long black hair outside the house at 1:40 p.m. and put him in a patrol car.
Two were attacked with tree stakes and taken to a hospital, an officer at the scene said. The stakes were apparently taken from across the street, but it is unclear why the fight started.
On the sidewalk across the street from the house, an 8-foot Crape Myrtle tree and two standard 2.5-inch stakes were uprooted and missing.
An officer wearing rubber gloves took a roughly six-foot part of the tree and some branches into evidence, along with a black shoe and other items. Leaves and small branches were scattered in the driveway surrounded by a yellow police line.
