A man was arrested after a woman from overseas disclosed to hospital workers that she was forced to work as an unpaid nanny, San Mateo police said Friday.
A man identified as Qi Li was accused of human trafficking, felony criminal threats, and brandishing a weapon, police said.
Officers responded to a local hospital at 1:19 p.m. Wednesday after the woman told medical staff she was being trafficked and threatened, police said.
The woman told officers she came to the U.S. on a work visa to be a caretaker for a family’s small child. Once she arrived in San Mateo, she said, her passport was taken, she was verbally abused, denied personal liberties and not paid, according to police.
The victim told officers that on one occasion a man held a knife to her throat and told her he was going to kill her, police said.
Police said human trafficking is the exploitation of another person through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. Human trafficking is typically divided into sex trafficking and labor trafficking.
Police said they obtained a temporary safe living arrangement and support services for the woman.
