A San Mateo husband and wife are being charged with conspiracy, labor human trafficking, wage theft and assault for allegedly abusing their nanny, a Chinese citizen who came to the United States to take care of their 9-month-old child, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Qi Li pleaded not guilty and both parties are out on a $250,000 bond. Jie Xu will enter a plea Oct. 17.
The couple, 35-year-old Li and 37-year-old Xu, employed the victim through an employment agency, according to the DA’s Office. They allegedly made her work seven days a week, yelling at her, berating her and not allowing her to go outside.
The defendants allegedly took her passport and refused to pay her, and in one instance Li took a knife to her neck, the DA’s Office said.
On Aug. 17, the couple’s baby was hospitalized at Stanford Hospital, where the victim informed staff how she had been treated and an investigation ensued.
Li will go to a pretrial hearing Oct. 31.
