Faced with a $6.8 million deficit, Redwood City councilmembers tonight will host the first of its study sessions on the budget in which they are expected to cut up to 41 positions and restructure services.
Final budget decisions will be made at a later date. For now, the council will begin discussing the hard choices needed to balance its bottom line.
The city is also looking at raising new revenue — approximately $500,000 in 2010-2011 and $600,000 in 2011-2012 — through fee hikes for using downtown gated parking facilities, fire inspections, after-school sports programs, non-resident enrollment in classes and camps and field use by organized sports.
The city also wants to revise its benefits structure because nearly 80 percent of Redwood City’s general fund budget goes to salaries and benefits. More immediately, though, the proposed reductions include cutbacks in building permit processing and building inspection, one fire engine company, library hours, child care, parks maintenance, traffic safety and street maintenance.
Monday’s study session specifically will include an overview of the recommended budget followed by more detailed presentations on police, fire, parks/recreation/community services and the library.
The City Council meets 7 p.m. Monday, June 21 at City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City. The second meeting will be Monday, June 29. A third is scheduled for June 30, if needed.
