Mountain View police are looking for an auto thief who inadvertently took a carload of human tissue samples locked inside a courier vehicle parked in back of a hospital earlier this week.
The white 1999 Toyota Corolla was stolen from a white loading zone adjacent to El Camino Hospital at 2400 Hospital Drive shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, according to police spokesman Jim Bennett.
But the Toyota was not the only item stolen, and not the most valuable. The car was a courier vehicle belonging to an independent pathology lab and was apparently carrying human tissue samples from a number of private practices en route to the lab, according to hospital officials.
None of the samples were taken from or set to be delivered to the hospital, officials stressed.
Bennett said police are looking for a cooler that held 30 tissue samples scheduled for biopsy tests and apparently bound for the pathology lab. Police say it is imperative that the individually bottled and bagged samples are returned so that patients who provided them may be notified of test results.
The container, described as a medium-sized white Igloo cooler with large "biohazard" stickers on the sides, may be taken to any hospital or police department, Bennett said.
Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call the Mountain View Police Department at (650) 903-6344.
