The new In-N-Out Burger at Rollins Road and Millbrae Avenue was shut down temporarily yesterday afternoon after an 8-inch water main burst shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.
A Millbrae Public Works crew talked to In-N-Out management and agreed to shut off its water during its slowest time, from about 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., to fix it.
Public Works Director Ron Popp said the roughly 45-year-old main was already on a list to be replaced, and stress was not added to it with the new restaurant that opened March 31.
The pipe also supplies water to the Clarion and Westin hotels, but they switched to an alternate source of water after the pipe broke.
"It was a real challenge to keep In-N-Out open," Popp said Tuesday night.
A crew of six worked on the broken main from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m., and was expected to start again at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning to finish.
Adrian Road had recently been paved and Popp said he cringed when it was ripped up. The pipe was ready to be replaced.
"We've known that we've had to do some work on that," Popp said.
