Caltrans will attempt to alleviate traffic on the busiest bridge in the country tomorrow when lanes designated for electronic toll system customers open on the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge at 5 a.m.
Just in time for the unruly morning commute from the East Bay to San Francisco, Caltrans is dedicating one middle lane, the number 11, of 20 toll booth lanes on the Bay Bridge for the exclusive use of FasTrak customers. One other lane, the number 12 lane, will be open for both FasTrak customers and cash/ticket patrons.
In December, Caltrans expects to open another mixed-use lane, located at toll booth 20 on the far right side on the bridge.FasTrak is an electronic toll collection system where a small transponder device placed on the windshield of a vehicle abolishes the need to slow down to pay an attendant.
