The wife of the president of a company accused of providing illegal steroids to professional athletes pleaded not guilty today to possession of methamphetamine, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Audrey Ann Conte, 48, who had just been sentenced for possession of the drug for sale 10 days earlier, was stopped and searched May 23, said Deputy District Attorney Morley Pitt. A small amount of methamphetamine was allegedly found in her bra, Pitt said.
Conte is married to Victor Conte, the president of the Burlingame-based Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative, which has recently made headlines because it faces federal charges for allegedly distributing previously undetectable steroids to athletes.
Audrey Conte had been sentenced to 120 days in jail for her possession for sale charge, but she was released immediately because she had already served the time in a state mental hospital, Pitt said. She was also sentenced to three years probation for that charge, which is what gave an officer the right to search her when she was thought to be under the influence May 23, Pitt said. Conte allegedly had less than a gram of the drug in her bra, Pitt added.
