A 29-year-old San Jose man charged with felony pimping in San Mateo County may soon stand trial after his psychiatrist vouched for his competence, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney s Office.
A judge appointed another doctor to Yuan Yu’s case Thursday to determine whether he is fit to stand trial on charges he transported a suspected prostitute to a San Mateo location that was part of a 2013 nationwide child prostitution sweep, according to prosecutors.
The sweep resulted in the arrest of 17 Bay Area pimps and the rescue of 12 children who were forced into prostitution, according to police.
Yu was arrested when he responded to a undercover detective’s request for a $250 per hour female escort through an escort service. He allegedly drove a Taiwanese woman who’d been in the United States just two days to a designated location and called the detective upon his arrival, at which point police detained him and the woman, according to prosecutors.
Investigations uncovered multiple cellphones and Western Union receipts showing $31,800 had been sent to China. Authorities determined Yu was the driver who’d collect payment for prostitutes, and that the woman he arrived with was fearful of him, according to prosecutors.
Despite Yu being arraigned in 2014, the case has dragged on for years and included a mistrial after the first trial went two weeks past the expected end. Yu’s competence has been called into question with doctors offering differing opinions, according to prosecutors. A judge in 2016 also questioned whether there was an issue with language translation in the case while cross-examining Yu, according to prosecutors.
He will next appear in court Sept. 21 for receipt of the recently appointed doctor s report, according to prosecutors.
