A 13-year-old boy was reported missing in San Carlos on Thursday night after he didn’t return home from his middle school that afternoon, a police commander said today.
Joseph Mendoza was last seen at Central Middle School, located at 828 Chestnut St., at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday, San Carlos police Cmdr. Greg Hart said.
His family reported him missing at about 9 p.m.
Mendoza had been summoned to the principal’s office that afternoon and may have been concerned about possible discipline issues.
Officers looked for him throughout the night, checking with friends and relatives, as well as parks, restaurants and other places. Mendoza had not been found as of 1:15 p.m., and investigators were continuing to talk to various family and friends today, Hart said.
There doesn’t appear to be any signs of abduction or foul play, he said.

Mendoza recently moved to San Carlos from Redwood City, and investigators believe he may be somewhere in either city.
He is described as a Hispanic boy who is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 120 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes.
Mendoza was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with long blue sleeves, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes. He had a skateboard with bright green wheels with him, according to police.
He has never run away, has difficulty with directions, and does not know how to use public transit, police said. Investigators believe he doesn’t have money with him.
Anyone with information about Mendoza’s whereabouts is asked to call San Carlos police at (650) 802-4277.
