DAVID SHANNON-LIER: “OF HEAVEN AND EARTH,” AT THE SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT MUSEUM. In his ongoing series, “Of Heaven and Earth,” artist David Shannon-Lier produces large-scale photographs that consider the landscape on both a human and cosmic scale. Building site-specific installations in the landscape, Shannon-Lier intervenes with the terrain in front of his camera to create visual interactions — revealed through long-exposure photographs — between the Earth and the celestial bodies above it. In preparation for each meticulously crafted image, the artist uses a surveyor’s transit to accurately determine the arc of the approaching sun or moon. He then stacks rocks, manipulates branches and uses other found materials to make marks that will interact with or extend the arc of the chosen astronomical object. Photographed with a large format film camera and using exposure times often in excess of five hours. A collection of these images is on view in “David Shannon-Lier: Of Heaven and Earth” at the San Francisco Airport Museum. David Shannon-Lier is a Montana-based artist and educator. His work has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions at venues including the Essex Art Center in Lawrence, MA; the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; The Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts; the Corn Center for the Visual Arts in Columbus, Georgia, and the Phoenix Art Museum. Shannon-Lier, based in Livingston, Montana, is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Montana State University. “David Shannon-Lier: Of Heaven and Earth” may be seen at the San Francisco Airport Terminal 3, Pre-Security, through April 18.

“FACES” — A COLLECTION OF PORTRAITS IN OIL AND PASTEL BY LINDA SALTER, AT THE PORTOLA ART GALLERY IN MENLO PARK. The Portola Art Gallery presents “Faces,” a collection of portraits in oil and pastel by Linda Salter. This exhibit features portraits of friends and relatives, artists’ models, and subjects from her travels in foreign countries, and includes current work as well as a few early favorites. The artist uses a variety of styles and approaches, from classical to modern, and usually paints from live subjects. Salter said: “I’ve always found that of all the types of paintings I do, it’s the portraits that pull people into the studio. Somehow people feel welcomed by faces. What I especially like to capture are the eyes, because usually a person’s eyes are what draw you in. I also love to have light and shadow captured on a face because the shadows define the structure of a face like nothing else does.” Salter, who works primarily in oils and pastels, spent more than three decades as an instructor and administrator in California colleges, serving as president of Skyline College in San Bruno and chancellor of West Valley-Mission Community College District in Santa Clara County. “Faces” is on view at the Portola Art Gallery at Allied Arts Guild, 75 Arbor Road, Menlo Park, through March 30. A reception for the artist is scheduled for March 2, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. For more information call 321-0220 or visit www.portolaartgallery.com.
