Go to any sporting event - at just about any level - and you're bound to hear some rather choice words.
In the heat of battle - so to speak - players and coaches often swear without thinking about it. Swearing appears to be part of our culture. Turn on the television or the radio and you're bound to hear some type of swearing, from innocuous to hard-core.
Now the Lounge is not here to preach. Far be it for me to chastise people for using four-letter words. The Lounge has a hard time itself watching its tongue, especially around Baby Lounge, with her a fairly large vocabulary for a 17 month old.
But not everyone just lets swearing roll off their back. Some people are still taken aback when certain words or phrases are used in public. So kudos to the Woodside cheerleaders for taking responsibility. During Woodside's half-time show - which rivals that of the Super Bowl with cheerleaders, dance squads and mascots all getting time - one of the songs coming out of the public address system had a couple of swear words. A Woodside cheerleader took the mic, explained that the words should have been edited out and apologized to the crowd.
Whether a Woodside administrator forced the apology or not, is beside the point. Today's generation of high school students grew up with certain words, phrases and terminology they don't think twice about. But there are still those who get upset and the apology was the appropriate thing to do. Better do it at that moment than wait for someone to complain to the school and blow the whole thing out of proportion.

And speaking of Woodside, the contingent of Wildcat mascots continues to grow. In the first week of the football season, there were two. Then three. Then four. As of last week, there were five Wildcats prowling the sideline.

Someone better get those cats neutered. Don't they know there is a serious feral cat issue on the Peninsula?

In light of College of San Mateo's 45-14 loss to Butte in football Saturday afternoon, the best thing to happen to the Bulldogs was the decision that gave them a forfeit win over West Hills, amending CSM's record from 4-1 to 5-0 entering Saturday's contest.
West Hills, which beat CSM 34-27 Sept. 18, used an ineligible player due to a clerical error in its first three games. West Hills forfeited all three of those contests.
While the error may mar West Hills' record, it raised its esteem in the eyes of the rest of those teams that favor even playing fields. West Hills Director of Athletic Bob Clement noticed the error last week and instead of brushing it under the rug, reported the transgression to the commissioner of the Northern California Football Association.
Props to Clement for realizing there's more to sports than just wins and losses.
