Drew Shiller's latest performance even left his coach in awe. Shiller pitched two scoreless innings of relief and hit the game-winning home run in the sixth inning as No. 1 seed Burlingame edged No. 8 Willow Glen 7-6 in a thrilling Central Coast Section Division II quarterfinal game on Saturday at Washington Park in Santa Clara.
The Panthers (25-3) play No. 12 Riordan on Thursday at San Jose Municipal Stadium at 4 p.m. Burlingame led Willow Glen (18-8-1) 6-1 after two innings before Justin Jeffery's home run highlighted a four-run, third-inning outburst.
Willow Glen added a run in the fourth to tie things at 6 before Shiller smacked a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth to put Burlingame ahead for good. Shiller also earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out four. Anthony Edwards started and lasted just 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs. Eric Fregosi, coming off a 39 pitch outing on Thursday, tossed 2 and 1/3 innings, yielding one hit and one run.
Shiller came on in the sixth with no outs and a runner on first. He promptly struck out the side to end the threat. Burlingame coach Rich Sciutto wasn't so much impressed with Shiller's home run or pitching, but more so with his fiery leadership skills.
"Drew is something else…this kid is unbelievable," Sciutto said. "I know he's a team leader and wants to take control. He's done it in football and basketball. He has the ball in his hands and can control the outcome. In baseball you don't have that opportunity, with the exception of a couple of opportunities. He took control today.
"When they tied it, he came in the dugout saying everything was OK. He was pumping everyone up with his athletic ability and state of mind. It rubbed off on the kids. He made everyone believe we were going to win and then he made sure we did. He just took over the leadership role. It was such an important game and he rose to the top. I'm in awe of this kid."

Bellarmine 6, Serra 5
The No. 2 seed Padres (22-9) lost a nine-inning heartbreaker to No. 7 Bellarmine (24-12) on Saturday at San Jose's PAL Stadium. The game was tied at 3 after seven innings before the Bells scored four runs in the top of the ninth on a pair of two-run homers. Serra rallied for three in the bottom half on Doug Hansen's home run. Hansen, Jimmy Parque and Drew Pedersen had two hits each. Chuck Lofgren tossed seven innings, allowing two runs, six hits while striking out 10 in his final game in a Serra uniform.
The loss concluded a roller coaster year for Serra, which started fast, faded badly down the stretch before turning it back on in the postseason. The Padres went into the Easter Break second in West Catholic League play. They won their tournament before dropping five of their last seven regular season games.
Serra then defeated Mitty, St. Francis and Valley Christian to win the WCAL tournament and a share of the league title. But coach Pete Jensen said the team's lack of hitting did them in.
"We pitched well enough, but we really don't have a lot of power and can't string hits together," Jensen said. "When teams made a mistake, we couldn't capitalize on it. We fell apart near the end of league play and then won three games in three days to make us co-champs, which basically saved our season."
