Rangers blank Cubs 6-0, snapping Chicago’s second 10-game win streak

Jalen Beeks (2-1) retired all four batters he faced after relieving Jack Leiter, the Texas starter who had to work around nine baserunners and threw 97 pitches over 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Cole Winn and Gavin Collyer followed Beeks to wrap up the Rangers’ four-hitter and fourth shutout this year.

Edward Cabrera (3-1) allowed five runs in five innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Chicago (27-13) was held scoreless for the fourth time after winning 20 of its previous 23 games, with those 10-game streaks sandwiching a three-game skid. It was the first time since 1935 that the Cubs had multiple 10-game win streaks in the same season.

Cubs left fielder Ian Happ extended his on-base streak to 30 games when he drew a walk in the first inning. The only longer active streak in the majors is 33 games by the Athletics’ Nick Kurtz, who had two doubles Saturday in a 6-2 win over Baltimore.

Leiter allowed multiple runners in each of the first four innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked five, including his last batter to fall one out shy of qualifying for the win.

BLUE JAYS 14, ANGELS 1

TORONTO (AP) — Brandon Valenzuela hit a three-run home run, Ernie Clement had a solo homer among his career-high tying five hits and Toronto used a seven-run fifth inning to rout Los Angeles.

Mason Fluharty (2-0) worked one inning for the win as Toronto set season-highs in runs and hits (20).

Clement had infield singles in the second and fourth, then drove in a run with a hard single off the glove of third baseman Yoán Moncada in the fifth. He homered off Mitch Farris to begin the seventh, his second of the season, then singled in the ninth.

Valenzuela went 4 for 5, with four RBIs in his first career four-hit game, coming within a triple of the cycle. He homered on the first pitch he saw from Farris in the fifth.

Mike Trout went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts before being replaced defensively by Bryce Teodosio, ending a 23-game run of reaching base in Toronto that began in May 2015.

Adam Frazier drove in the Angels’ only run with a pinch-hit single in the top of the eighth, then stayed in to pitch the bottom half. Frazier gave up four runs and five hits including a solo homer by Jesús Sánchez.

Jack Kochanowicz (2-2) allowed nine hits and seven runs, six earned, in four-plus innings. He faced six batters in the fifth but didn’t record an out.

REDS 3, ASTROS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) — Chase Burns threw six innings of one-run ball, Matt McClain drove in two runs and Cincinnati snapped its eight-game losing streak with a victory over Houston.

Burns (4-1) struck out two and allowed four hits. The No. 2 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft lowered his ERA to 2.11, good for third in the National League and seventh in the majors.

The Reds’ skid was their longest since also dropping eight straight early in the 2024 season.

Houston’s Braden Shewmake started the scoring with a homer in the fifth inning.

The Reds answered in the bottom of the frame. After Cam Smith dropped a pop-up in right field to allow Jose Trevino to load the bases, McClain drove in two with a single to left and Elly De La Cruz brought one more across with another single.

Zach Cole fired a strike to home to throw out McClain and end the inning, one batter after his throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to cross.

Pierce Johnson worked a hitless ninth to pick up the save.

ATHLETICS 6, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) — Brent Rooker hit a three-run homer in the third inning, and the Athletics beat Baltimore.

Aaron Civale (4-1) pitched five scoreless innings for the A’s. Shane Baz (1-4) allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings for Baltimore, which lost for the eighth time in 10 games and received boos from the home crowd.

Nick Kurtz doubled twice for the A’s and has now reached base in 33 straight games. He led off the first with a two-base hit and then scored on a single by Shea Langeliers.

Rooker’s fifth homer of the season made it 4-0. Then the Orioles left Baz in to face the top of the order a third time in the fifth. Kurtz doubled, stole third without a throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by Langeliers. Baz’s outing ended when he was hit with a pitch clock violation for ball four to Rooker.

Baz was Baltimore’s big offseason addition to a pitching staff that needed help. The Orioles then signed him to a $68 million, five-year contract that went well beyond what this front office had previously been willing to commit to a pitcher. In eight starts this season, he has a 5.48 ERA.

MARLINS 8, NATIONALS 7

MIAMI (AP) — Xavier Edwards tied the game with a homer in the seventh inning, Jakob Marsee hit a three-run homer in the eighth and Florida rallied from down four runs to beat Washington.

It was the Marlins’ seventh comeback win of the season and their largest so far, passing a three-run rally against the Colorado Rockies on March 29.

Kyle Stowers finished a triple shy of the cycle and Otto Lopez had a single and a double to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Lopez’s streak is now the longest in MLB after Jacob Wilson of the A’s went hitless against the Baltimore Orioles.

Miami’s comeback began in the fourth inning after Stowers hit a two-run homer to right that cut the lead in half. Owen Caissie added another on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Edwards’ 422-foot solo homer in the seventh tied the game at 4-4.

Marsee found a hanging slider and sent it to the visiting bullpen in right to give the Marlins a 7-4 lead, and Leo Jiménez added a sacrifice fly to bring one more across.

After Michael Petersen got into trouble in the ninth and allowed three runs, John King came in for the final out and his first career save.

Miami starter Janson Junk struck out six in six innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. Andrew Nardi (3-2) earned the win in relief.

PHILLIES 9, ROCKIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Alec Bohm homered twice, doubled and drove in four runs in his return from a two-game benching, Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run homer and Philadelphia beat Colorado.

Trea Turner had four hits for the Phillies, who improved to 9-3 under interim manager Don Mattingly.

The Phillies fell behind on Willi Castro’s second-inning homer off Aaron Nola, but they broke out in the third against Kyle Freeland (1-4).

Bohm, who hadn’t played since Wednesday and entered with a .159 batting average, drove one out to left field to tie it. Bryson Stott and Trea Turner followed with singles, and Schwarber followed with a shot to the upper deck in right, his National League-leading 14th of the season.

Nola thought he had struck out Jake McCarthy on a 3-2 pitch to end the Rockies’ fourth, but McCarthy challenged and the pitch was ruled a ball by ABS. Kyle Karros then doubled home McCarthy and Troy Johnston to get the Rockies within 5-3.

Bohm homered again in the fourth and added a two-run double in the eighth, raising his average to .177.

Nola was pulled after 4 2/3 innings and 94 pitches, and the Phillies’ bullpen didn’t allow a hit the rest of the way. Tim Mayza (1-1) got the last out of the fifth.

Freeland allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits in five innings.

ROYALS 5, TIGERS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Wacha pitched seven scoreless innings, Bobby Witt Jr. hit an inside-the-park home run on a grounder and Kansas City beat Detroit.

Michael Massey had a three-run homer for the Royals, who will go for the series sweep on Sunday night.

Witt hit the ball down the right-field line in the first inning that bounced off the wall and eluded right fielder Kerry Carpenter. Witt motored around the bases and beat the relay throw to the plate for a two-run homer.

It was the Royals’ first inside-the-park home run since Witt did it in August 2023.

Carpenter left the game later with left shoulder soreness.

Wacha (4-2) gave up two hits, walked two and struck out six. It was his longest scoreless outing since throwing eight scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox on April 11.

Burch Smith (0-2) took the loss. He retired only one of the four batters he faced, allowing two runs on three hits in one-third of an inning.

DIAMONDBACKS 2, METS 1

PHOENIX (AP) — Merrill Kelly bounced back from three straight shaky starts to pitch seven effective innings and Arizona beat New York for a much-needed win.

Kelly (2-3) allowed a run on three hits and Paul Sewald worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save in as many chances. It was Arizona’s third win in 11 games.

Mets starter Clay Holmes (4-3) allowed a two-run single to Ildemaro Vargas in the third inning, but was otherwise sharp, allowing two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

He got little help from the Mets’ offense. New York had three hits a night after pulling out a 3-1 win in 10 innings over the Diamondbacks.

Kelly was much better after allowing 19 earned runs over 13 2/3 innings his previous three starts.

The right-hander allowed Brett Baty’s run-scoring single in the second inning and stranded two in the fifth after Tyrone Taylor’s two-out double. Kelly struck out six and walked three.

Arizona’s starters have pitched at least six innings in five straight starts for the first time since doing it in six straight last September.

WHITE SOX 6, MARINERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) — Miguel Vargas homered twice and drove in three runs, and Chicago beat Luis Castillo and Seattle.

Colson Montgomery also went deep for Chicago, which had lost three straight and four of five overall. Anthony Kay (2-1) pitched five innings of one-run ball.

The White Sox improved to 18-21 on the season. They were 11-28 after 39 games last year.

Julio Rodríguez had two of Seattle’s four hits. The Mariners had won three of four, including a 12-8 victory in the series opener on Friday night.

Castillo (0-4) surrendered four runs and five hits in four innings in his third consecutive loss. The right-hander struck out six and walked none.

It was Castillo’s first loss in five career starts against the White Sox. He was 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA against the South Siders coming into the night, allowing five earned runs in 26 1/3 innings.

Montgomery drove Castillo’s 1-2 fastball deep to right for a two-run drive with two out in the first. Montgomery’s 10th homer extended his on-base streak to a career-best 21 straight games.

Vargas hit a two-run shot off Castillo in the third and a solo drive off left-hander Josh Simpson in the fifth. He has nine homers this season after he set a career high with 16 last year.

PADRES 4, CARDINALS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado hit his 375th career homer and 200th in a Padres uniform, Ty France also went deep and San Diego beat St. Louis.

Fernando Tatis Jr. had a tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth inning to back Randy Vásquez (4-1), who gave up one run and six hits while striking out six in five innings.

Mason Miller got the final out of the eighth but the Padres’ closer ran into some uncharacteristic trouble in the ninth, walking two batters before Yahel Pozo reached when he struck out on a slider in the dirt. Miller escaped the jam by setting down JJ Wetherholt looking on a 101 mph fastball for his fourth strikeout of the inning.

The dominant right-hander has been scored on in just one of his 18 outings this season and has a major league-leading 12 saves in as many opportunities.

Machado homered in the eighth off reliever Matt Svanson to make it 4-2. He also hit 162 homers for Baltimore and 13 in half a season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

BREWERS 4, YANKEES 3, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) — William Contreras singled home the tying run in the eighth inning and hit a game-ending sacrifice fly in the 10th as Milwaukee rallied past New York.

The Yankees wasted a brilliant performance from Cam Schlittler and have lost back-to-back games for the first time since they dropped five in a row from April 8-12. On Friday, they got just three hits against Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski and Shane Drohan in a 6-0 defeat.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a leadoff homer and drove in two runs for the Yankees. Jake Bauers went deep for Milwaukee.

Schlittler got struck in the leg by a 108.5 mph liner off the bat of Contreras in the first but stayed in the game and allowed two hits in six scoreless innings, lowing his major league-leading ERA to 1.35.

After Ryan McMahon’s two-out RBI single on an 0-2 pitch from Aaron Ashby (7-0) put New York ahead 3-2 in the top of the 10th, Milwaukee scored twice in the bottom half to give Ashby the major league lead in wins.

Jackson Chourio’s one-out infield single off Fernando Cruz (3-1) tied it and put runners at first and second.

Tim Hill entered and got a comebacker from Brice Turang. The lefty reliever tried to throw out the lead runner at third, but his throw hit Luis Rengifo in the hand, loading the bases.

Contreras followed with a fly ball to right that easily brought home Rengifo.

TWINS 2, GUARDIANS 1, 11 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) — Byron Buxton doubled off the wall in left-center with one out in the 11th inning, scoring automatic runner Matt Wallner, and Minnesota beat Cleveland.

Buxton also drove in Minnesota’s first run and had its only other hit, belting his 22nd career leadoff homer on the third pitch of the game from Tanner Bibee. The Twins and Guardians each finished with two hits.

Cleveland loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and 10th, but Eric Orze (1-1) worked his way out of both jams in his 1 2/3 innings. Luis García pitched the 11th for his first save.

Rule 5 Draft selection Peyton Pallette (1-2) allowed one unearned run in two innings as AL Central Division leader Cleveland had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Buxton has 13 homers — all in his last 23 games — and is two behind MLB leaders Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Munetaka Murakami of the White Sox. Minnesota is 20-40 against the Guardians since the start of the 2022 season.

BRAVES 7, DODGERS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson each had two RBIs and Atlanta rocked Blake Snell for five runs in three innings in his season debut for a win over Los Angeles.

Spencer Strider (1-0) threw six scoreless innings, Austin Riley, Michael Harris II and Drake Baldwin each drove in a run, and the Braves snapped an eight-game losing streak at Dodger Stadium.

Snell (0-1) had been dealing with left shoulder fatigue, delaying the start of his season after missing much of 2025 because of a left shoulder injury before contributing in the playoffs to the Dodgers’ second consecutive World Series title. He had been scheduled to make one more rehabilitation start in the minors, but Los Angeles moved him up with the hope Snell would able to throw five innings.

Instead, Snell was pulled after allowing four earned runs, six hits and two walks on 77 pitches with five strikeouts.

Snell immediately found himself in a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the first inning, but he limited the damage to one run.

The Braves again loaded the bases in the second, and they capitalized to take a 5-0 lead when Albies stretched out to connect on a two-run single, followed up by Olson’s two-run single.

Andy Pages prevented the shutout with a two-run homer in the ninth for the Dodgers.
