San Mateo 3, Sacramento City 2
The Bulldogs had four players finish with double-digit kills and they needed all of them as they outlasted the Panthers in five sets — 25-22, 21-25, 26-24, 17-25, 15-9 — to advance to the quarterfinals of the 3C2A Northern California regional tournament.
Both CSM (23-5), the No. 6 seed, and No. 11 Sacramento (23-10), had first-round byes.
The Bulldogs were led by Synia Hunt, who finished with 17 kills. Juliana Mufarreh and Addison Turner each had a dozen, while Madison Williams finished with 11.
Turner had 12 kills on just 17 attacks, a spectacular .647 hitting percentage.
Setter Alyssa Polanco was nearly flawless in running the offense, pumping out 50 assists, while Kathleen Suayan led the defense with 25 digs.
The Bulldogs will next go on the road to No. 3 Feather River-Quincy (32-1) for a quarterfinal matchup at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Golden Eagles advanced with a 3-0 sweep of No. 14 Modesto — 25-9, 25-12, 25-13.
Boys’ basketball
Milpitas 59, Carlmont 51
A furious fourth-quarter rally came up short as the Scots dropped their season opener to the Trojans in Belmont Tuesday night.
Carlmont (0-1), the defending Central Coast Section Division I champ, trailed by 10 at the half, 36-26, and then were held to just four points in the third as Milpitas (1-0) built a 48-30 advantage going into the final quarter.
The Scots finally got going in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Trojans 21-11, but the deficit was too large for Carlmont to overcome.
Westmoor 55, Design Tech 40
Austin Prado got off to a strong start to the 2025-26 season as he led the Rams to a season-opening win over the Dragons.
Prado, a senior forward, scored nearly half his teams points, pouring in 23 for Westmoor (1-0). Prado also added eight rebounds. Elison Capulla and Augustus Le combined for nine assists for the Rams.
Washington-SF 84, Capuchino 55
The Mustangs’ 20-point third quarter matched their total first-half output as they fell to the Eagles in San Bruno.
Washington (1-0) came out flying to start the game, outscoring Capuchino (0-1) 27-9 in the first period and led 54-20 at halftime.
The Mustangs finally got going in the third quarter, scoring 20 points. But the Eagles were even better, putting up 34 to lead 78-40 going into the final period. Capuchino outscored Washington 15-6 in the fourth.
In other action ...
Jefferson (1-0) battled to a 47-43 win over Balboa-SF (1-1), 47-41.

Girls’ basketball
Jefferson 54, Burton 34
The Grizzlies scored a combined 35 points in the second and third quarters as they cruised past the Pumas for their first win of the season.
Jefferson (1-1) led just 9-6 after the first quarter, but erupted for 20 points in the second to lead 29-14 at halftime.
And the break didn’t slow the Grizzlies’ roll as they outscored the Panthers 15-8 in the third to lead 44-22 going into the fourth.
In other action...
Priory (1-0), which earned the No. 3 seed in the Open Division last season, opened the 2025-26 season by holding off Windward-Los Angeles, 60-58. Windward made it to the So Cal Division I final last seaason.
El Camino (1-0) cruised to a season-opening 49-32 win over Balboa-SF (0-1).
Summit Shasta (1-0) posted a season-opening, 47-39 win over Capuchino (1-1).
Woodside (2-0) went over the 50-point mark for the second game in a row, beating San Lorenzo Valley (0-1), 56-29.
Gunn (1-0) got past Burlingame (0-1), 42-34.
South City (2-0) rolled to a second-straight lopsided win, beating The Bay School (1-1), 50-33.
Women’s college basketball
Skyline 67, Merritt-Oakland 44
The Trojans finished with a flourish, scoring 27 points in the fourth quarter on their way to the win over the Panthers, their fourth in a row.
Skyline (7-1) opened a 17-8 lead after one period, but Merritt (3-4) answered in the second, outscoring the Trojans 15-7 to trail by one at halftime, 24-23.
Skyline pushed its lead to eight, 40-32, going into the fourth before the Trojans put the Panthers away.
Nia Rogers led a trio of Trojans in double-digit scoring, finishing with 19 points. Jahzara Pratt added 14. Niesha Ramirez posted a double-double in the win, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Ramirez also handed out four assists, blocked three shots and poached three steals.
Lexi Carson, a freshman out of Hillsdale, also did a good job filling the stat sheet. She scored six points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists and came away with two steals.
