Menlo surging to another CCS tennis title
The Knights are one of the winningest tennis programs in Central Section history and the defending champs are in line to add to that legacy.
Menlo, which has won 18 CCS championships since 1998, is on track for its 19th and fourth in six years as the top-seeded Knights stayed undefeated on the season after beating Los Gatos 6-1 in a CCS quarterfinal match Monday in Atherton.
Up next for Menlo (23-0) is a semifinal matchup with No. 4 Los Altos (17-9) at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Atherton. Los Altos beat No. 5 Homestead (14-8), 5-2.
The Menlo doubles teams, which features senior Arki Temsamani, junior Dylan Kothari and four freshmen — Alex Zhou, Maximus Chan, Mile Burnett and Sage Ash — combined to sweep the three doubles matches and were the first matches off the court.
The Knights then took three of the four singles matches to complete the rout, led by No. 2 singles player Lucas Huang, who was dominant in a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Surya De Datta, playing at No. 1, lost six games in a straight-set sweep, 6-2, 6-4. David Lipeles got a break in each set to win his No. 3 singles match, 6-4, 6-4.
Los Gatos (16-4) avoided the sweep, picking up its lone win at No. 4 singles, where Ryan Shahalob rallied from a set down to beat Menlo’s Matthew Franc in a marathon match — 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 10-8.
Menlo is the last San Mateo County team standing. Sixth-seeded Sacred Heart Prep (15-9) saw its season end with a 5-2 loss to No. 3 Harker (16-4). Unseeded Serra (12-6), which upset No. 7 Palo Alto in the second round last Friday, had its season end with a 7-0 loss to No. 2 Saratoga (16-3).
