The Burlingame boys' basketball team was forced to forfeit last Wednesday's 74-41 win over Carlmont for using an ineligible player.
The player in question, who was not identified, played two minutes at the end of the game. Apparently, the player was not eligible for Wednesday's game but became legal Thursday morning.
"I thought he was cleared and we played him," said Burlingame coach Jeff Dowd.
Said assistant coach Cliff Cretan: "The grades were out (Wednesday) but didn't become official until the next day."
The loss drops the Panthers into a first-place tie with Woodside in the Peninsula Athletic League's South Division and puts an end to the Panthers run to an undisputed league title. Last season, there was a four-way tie for the championship and two years ago three teams tied for the title.

"It ruins a perfect (PAL) season," said assistant coach Bob Ennis. "How often do those come around?"
Not only did it end Burlingame's pursuit for an outright title, suddenly the Panthers need to win their final three games to assure a co-championship. The coaching staff admitted they were disappointed when the news came down late Monday but said the team handled it better than they did.
"We were all discouraged," Cretan said. "But the kids were like, 'We'll take care of it.'"
The Burlingame staff and administration reported the mistake itself to the Peninsula Athletic League. The coaching staff admitted it would have been easy to just overlook the indiscretion, but the thought never crossed their collective minds.
"We could have done that, but that's not how we do things here," Cretan said.
