One day after the small Redwood City charter school’s baseball threw a five-inning no-hitter, the softball team responded in a big way. The Lady Dragons (1-0 PSAL, 3-3 overall) not only followed the baseball team’s feat with a no-hitter of their own, they were perfect in an abbreviated five-inning mercy-rule win 16-0 against KIPP Collegiate-San Jose (0-1, 0-1) in Wednesday’s Private School Athletic League opener.
In just her sixth varsity appearance, freshman pitcher Adelaide Chuang set down all 15 batters she faced to record a perfect game at Independence High School.
Chuang fueled the offense in the top of the first, registering the Dragons’ first hit to spark a seven-run inning. Then the freshman went to work in the circle, striking out the first two batters she faced, en route to eight punch-outs on the day. She didn’t allow a ball out of the infield, recording six groundouts and one pop-out. She finished out the feat with a groundout to freshman shortstop Kendall Hom, who threw across the diamond to sophomore first baseman Angelica Soto for the game’s final out.
Chuang also had a monster day at the plate, going 4 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs. It’s her fourth multi-hit game this season, each of them three hits or more. She is off to a 16 for 22 start to her varsity career, while slashing .727/.739/.955.
Design Tech totaled 18 hits in the game, with senior Caitlin Edwards also totaling four hits to go with three RBIs. Hom added two hits with a triple and three RBIs, while Soto and senior catcher Ella Lewis added two hits and two RBIs apiece.
Design Tech baseball’s no-hitter Tuesday afternoon was also a shortened five-inning game, with junior Aiden Tom and relievers Josiah Hernandez and Charlie Poole combining to hold Summit Tahoma-San Jose hitless in the Dragons’ 12-0 victory.
