Jo Adell robs 3 home runs as Angels beat Mariners 1-0

J.P. Crawford led off the ninth with a drive toward the right-field corner, where Adell leaped to glove the ball, flipped over the wall and fell into the first row of seats before holding his glove up to present the catch, which was upheld after a replay review.

Adell leaped high above the yellow line on the wall to deny Cal Raleigh of a solo homer in the first and made a nearly identical catch to deny Josh Naylor of a solo homer in the eighth.

Jordan Romano, the Angels’ sixth pitcher, then retired Cole Young on an infield popup and struck out Leo Rivas for his third save.

TIGERS 11, CARDINALS 6, 8 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) — Kerry Carpenter, Zach McKinstry and Matt Vierling hit two-run homers and drove in three runs apiece, and Detroit powered its way to a rain-shortened victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

The game was called after 8 1/3 innings following a 40-minute rain delay.

Gleyber Torres added a solo shot for the Tigers, who had only two home runs in their first seven games.

The game was delayed with one out in the ninth because of inclement weather. The field was deemed unplayable after the delay.

Detroit starter Jack Flaherty was charged with five runs in four-plus innings. He allowed three hits and four walks and hit three other batters with pitches.

Brant Hurter (1-0) picked up the win with one inning of scoreless relief.

Jordan Walker had three hits, including a grand slam, and drove in five runs to carry St. Louis’ offense. Cardinals starter Dustin May (0-2) gave up seven runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

WHITE SOX 6, BLUE JAYS 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Munetaka Murakami hit a two-run homer and Colson Montgomery followed with a solo shot in Chicago’s three-run sixth inning as the White Sox beat Toronto for its second straight victory.

Murakami’s 431-foot shot to straightaway center off Brendon Little was his fourth homer and first at home since signing with the White Sox (3-5) as a free agent in December. He added a sacrifice fly to finish with three RBIs. Miguel Vargas added two hits, including a double.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the sixth to give Toronto (4-4) a 2-1 lead. Pinch hitter Nathan Lukes drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Before the game, the Blue Jays placed two-time All-Star catcher Alejandro Kirk on the injured list with a dislocated and fractured left thumb.

Chris Murphy (1-0), the third of six Chicago pitchers, worked one inning and earned the win. Seranthony Dominguez worked around a single and walk in the ninth for his first save.

Little (0-2) got only one out, while allowing three runs on three hits.

BREWERS 5, ROYALS 2, 1ST GAME

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Garrett Mitchell matched a career high for RBIs with a two-run double and a three-run homer in the first three innings alone, and Milwaukee held on to beat Kansas City in the opener of their doubleheader.

Salvador Perez’s solo homer highlighted a six-run sixth inning as Kansas City beat Milwaukee to earn a doubleheader split.

After Perez’s second home run of the year snapped a 2-2 tie, the Royals chased Brandon Sproat (0-1) with three consecutive two-out singles. Kansas City took an 8-2 lead when eight straight hitters reached safely after two were out.

Sproat pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Royals starter Seth Lugo threw 103 pitches in five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks, striking out seven.

Nick Mears (1-0) earned the victory pitching a hitless sixth inning.

Eli Morgan recorded his second career save — and first since 2023 — with three scoreless frames, striking out five.

DODGERS 10, NATIONALS 5

WASHINGTON (AP) — Freddie Freeman hit two-run doubles in the first and second innings and Andy Pages added a three-run homer in the fifth to help Los Angeles to a rout of Washington.

Pages went 3 for 5 to raise his average to .500 (15 for 30) on the young season. The Dodgers have scored 23 runs on 32 hits in the first two games of this series despite losing Mookie Betts in the first inning Saturday because of lower back pain.

Tyler Glasnow (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out nine with two walks.

Jake Irvin (1-1) allowed six runs and eight hits in four innings.

PADRES 3, RED SOX 2

BOSTON (AP) — Ramón Laureano had a bloop RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning off closer Aroldis Chapman and San Diego outlasted Boston at frigid Fenway Park.

The starting temperature was 43 degrees, with wind gusting to 24 mph during the afternoon.

In the top of the ninth, Fernando Tatis Jr. doubled over center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela, who initially broke in, and Laureano followed with his go-ahead hit off Chapman (0-1). Tatis struck out swinging in his first four times up.

Adrian Morejon (1-0) worked an inning, and Mason Miller struck out all three batters he faced for his third save.

Trailing 2-1 in the eighth, Boston put runners on first and third with one out against Morejon. Pinch-hitter Andruw Monasterio hit what looked like a sure double-play grounder back to the mound, but second baseman Jake Cronenworth dropped the ball on the transfer before throwing late to first.

Freddy Fermin’s double pushed the Padres ahead 2-1 in the third.

Marcelo Mayer drove in a run for Boston in the second with a sacrifice fly, a day after the Red Sox won their home opener.

ASTROS 11, ATHLETICS 0

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Christian Walker homered, doubled and drove in two runs as Houston routed the Athletics.

Walker finished 3 for 5 with three runs scored, while Joey Loperfido, Yainer Diaz and Christian Vázquez each added three hits as Houston matched a season high with 11 runs.

Tatsuya Imai (1-0) struck out nine over 5 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing three hits and three walks for Houston.

The Astros struck first in the opening inning. Jeremy Peña doubled and scored when José Altuve lined an RBI single to center. Walker followed later in the inning with an RBI single that brought home Yordan Alvarez for a 2-0 lead.

PIRATES 3, ORIOLES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Nick Yorke singled home Bryan Reynolds in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Pittsburgh to a victory over Baltimore.

Reynolds doubled against Ryan Helsley (0-1) with one out. Baltimore then intentionally walked Ryan O’Hearn to bring up Yorke, who had entered as a pinch runner in the eighth. Yorke worked the count to 2-2 and fouled off a couple of pitches before Helsley delivered a 99 mph fastball that home plate umpire Dan Iassogna ruled a ball.

Helsley tapped his head to initiate an ABS challenge but the Orioles were out of them after failing on a pair of challenges earlier in the game. Yorke took the next pitch and lined a shot over the head of Baltimore left fielder Dylan Beavers to lift the Pirates to their fourth straight victory.

Reynolds had two of Pittsburgh’s eight hits. Jake Mangum delivered a game-tying run with an infield single in the eighth.

Dennis Santana (2-0) pitched a perfect ninth to set the stage for Yorke.

REDS 2, RANGERS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rhett Lowder allowed three hits over six innings as Cincinnati beat Texas, giving the right-hander his first win since 2024 after missing all of last season because of injuries.

Graham Ashcraft, Tony Santillan and Emilio Pagán each worked a scoreless inning to wrap up the Reds’ second shutout this season. Pagán matched the early MLB lead with his third save, his second in as many days, benefitting from a double play while walking two and giving up a two-out single.

Cincinnati got their runs on back-to-back RBI singles by Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart in the first off Kumar Rocker (0-1) before Lowder (1-0) had even thrown the first of his 82 pitches in his second start this season.

Lowder struck out four and gave up two leadoff walks. After allowing back-to-back singles with two outs in the first, the Rangers didn’t get another runner to second base against him. He retired 12 of his last 13 batters he faced.

Texas, which has lost its first two home games and three games in a row overall, was held scoreless for the first time.

DIAMONDBACKS 2, BRAVES 1

PHOENIX (AP) — Rookie José Fernandez’s bunt single in the second inning led to two unearned runs and Arizona held on to defeat Atlanta.

With runners at first and second, Fernandez dropped a bunt to the third-base side of the mound. Braves pitcher Bryce Elder picked it up and threw wildly to first, allowing Gabriel Moreno and Nolan Arenado to score.

Michael Soroka (2-0) allowed one run in five innings for the Diamondbacks. He gave up four hits and one run. He threw 91 pitches in walking three and striking out three.

Taylor Clarke, Jonathan Loáisaga, Juan Morillo and Paul Sewald each pitched a 1-2-3 relief inning, with Sewald picking up his third save.

Elder (1-1) still hasn’t allowed an earned run this season in 13 innings, but he took the loss on Saturday because of his own error. He pitched seven innings, giving up four hits, walking one and striking out eight.

The Braves’ run came in the second. Mike Yastrzemski led off with a walk, advanced to second on an infield out and scored on Dominic Smith’s two-out single to left.

Neither team had a runner after the fifth inning.

YANKEES 9, MARLINS 7

NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton stole his first base in the regular season since 2020 and had a go-ahead, two-run single to help New York beat Miami for its first 7-1 start in seven seasons.

Stanton snapped a 6-6 tie in the eighth with a clean single to left field off Michael Petersen (1-1) after the reliever walked three. In the seventh, Stanton swiped second for his first steal in a non-playoff game since Aug. 3, 2020.

The Yankees won in their final at-bat for the first time this year after Javier Sanoja hit a tying two-run double off Camilo Doval in the eighth. Brett Headrick (1-0) finished the eighth, and David Bednar loaded the bases before getting his fourth save.

Cody Bellinger helped the Yankees rally from a four-run deficit through four innings by hitting a two-run homer in the fifth and lifting a sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 5-4 lead.

Trent Grisham started New York’s three-run sixth with an RBI base hit and Aaron Judge followed with a tying single off Anthony Bender.

After drawing 11 walks Friday in an 8-2 win, the Yankees had 10 more.

PHILLIES 2, ROCKIES 1

DENVER (AP) — Trea Turner hit a go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning and Philadelphia beat Colorado.

Turner finished with two hits, and Kyle Schwarber added an RBI double in the first inning.

Jesús Luzardo (1-1) allowed one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out 11 and walking none in a strong bounce-back outing after a rough start to the season. Chase Dollander (1-1) took the loss in relief after allowing one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Turner worked a leadoff walk and scored when Schwarber lined a double to left field to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the first.

Colorado tied the game in the third as Troy Johnston singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Brett Sullivan’s RBI single to right.

Brandon Marsh singled and was advanced by J.T. Realmuto and Justin Crawford before Turner doubled to left field to put the Phillies up 2-1.

METS 9, GIANTS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Clay Holmes and Tobias Myers combined on a three-hitter and New York beat San Francisco.

Holmes (2-0) matched his career high with seven innings and allowed only one runner past first base. The right-hander gave up three hits and had four strikeouts with two walks.

Myers retired the final six batters in order for the Mets’ first shutout of the season.

Mark Vientos had three hits, and Tyrone Taylor hit a pinch three-run homer and drove in four runs. Marcus Semien, Bo Bichette and Brett Baty each had two hits.

Matt Chapman, Jung Hoo Lee and Jerar Encarnacion each had singles for the Giants.

San Francisco dropped to 1-5 at home this season.
