Burlingame-based airline Virgin America is flying high after a recent passenger survey of low-cost carriers by Zagat Survey. The airline tied for second with jetBlue Airways for overall quality among domestic economy carriers, following Midwest Airlines. Virgin America ranked first among U.S. carriers for its first class offering.

From January 2003 through September 2007, 178 children were adopted in San Mateo County, according to Human Services Agency which is celebrating National Adoptions Month. Central Elementary Principal Cori McKenzie welcomed students and guests to a celebration of the school’s recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education Monday. McKenzie pointed out that this year the school houses 353 students who were sitting closely together on the floor.
"Do you know what that means?” she asked students. "That means we didn’t invite the fire inspector,” McKenzie joked.

When lifelong coastside resident Aldo Giusti passed away Nov. 14, he left behind a long legacy of honors and recognition, according to the Board of Supervisors which adjourned in his honor Tuesday. Among the more interesting highlighs is Giusti’s abilities as an inventor; he held several patents, including one for an indoor golfing game and another for a mechanical Brussels sprout harvester.

Bay Area TV stations are reportedly already lining up attorneys to offer legal analysis for the Barry Bonds case, including Channel 7 which has brought former San Mateo County prosecutor Dean Johnson on board. Johnson, now a defense attorney, is no novice to televised commentary. He worked as an analyst during the Scott Peterson double-murder trial.

San Carlos Councilman Brad Lewis is displaying his cooking expertise on the Food Network nowadays. Food Network’s Dinner Impossible recently headed to Pixar Animation Studios in the San Francisco Bay Area to feed 600 animators, artists and staff a lunch that is inspired by their own imaginations. The mission was to create a menu that is representative of three Pixar favorites: Finding Nemo, Cars and Ratatouille, and he has just six hours to complete the mission. Lewis was the producer of Ratatouille, the blockbuster released this summer. Air time is 10:30 p.m., Dec. 9 and 1:30 a.m. Dec. 10.

State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco/San Mateo, traversed over 87 miles of his Peninsula district Thanksgiving day spreading holiday cheer to families in need. Yee’s hybrid vehicle made a total of 16 stops in San Mateo, Burlingame, Belmont, El Granada Pacifica, Daly City, South San Francisco and San Francisco to deliver 166 turkeys to local churches, nonprofits and community organizations.
While never to the scale of this year’s effort, Yee in collaboration with California Water Service Company (Cal Water) has conducted "Operation Gobble” for the past several years.
