Regarding the Trag’s project in San Mateo (“Second look for mixed-use Trag’s project” in the March 15 edition of the Daily Journal), I read about the suggestion to shut down a stretch of Baldwin Avenue between North Ellsworth Avenue and North B Street to car traffic.
I think this is great for me if I do not have to drive my wife, who has arthritis, to the Caltrain station. We, as well as many of our neighbors living near the intersection of Baldwin and El Camino Real, are retired and take the train. If we cannot drive to the train station directly on Baldwin, it means we have to take detours driving south on El Camino Real, left turn on Second Avenue, through several traffic lights then turn left on B Street. These are the downtown streets that are much more congested than Baldwin.
It’s not only inconvenient for those who need be taken to the train station, including those carrying baggage and taking taxis or Ubers, it will also worsen the congestion significantly in the core area of downtown. I am all for a pedestrian-friendly downtown and using mass transit, but I am not aware of any city in the world that prevents cars or buses from reaching a train station.
B Street between First and Third would make a wonderful pedestrian mall. It has lots of beautiful old historic buildings, a movie theater, good restaurants, and is close to the Caltrain station. It could be a place that people would go out of their way to visit. The city could at least remove street side parking and expand the sidewalks to make the area more pedestrian friendly.
