In 2017, I received a citation on Laurel Street in San Carlos for an issue with my license plate. I did not feel that I was at fault so I contacted state Sen. Jerry Hill, the Department of Motor Vehicles in Sacramento and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in San Carlos. Soon after, I received a call from a woman with the DMV in Sacramento that helped resolve the license plate issue along with help from the other mentioned parties.
Recently, I traveled to the local DMV office in Redwood City with appointment in hand, knowing I would have to wait in a line or two to renew my driver’s license. My suspicion was confirmed when I was told their computers were down. As I waited a few hours, I recalled the name of the woman with the DMV in Sacramento that was so helpful in 2017. For some reason, I kept her number. I gave this person a call and she asked me if she might call me back, which she promptly did.
The manager at the DMV in Redwood City told me, “I don’t know what you said to the DMV but our computers are up and running.” I could not believe it myself as I received my new driver’s license after all.
The folks at the DMV and Sheriff’s Office have a tough job to do when working with the public. I found all the people I talked with quite helpful, possibly because I approached them in a friendly manner with a smile. The Bay Area as a whole could use a lot more patience and some good manners.
