I am one of many ex-mayors called by Al pleading for the city’s help with the flooding issues surrounding the mobile home park. He has led the charge to create permanent change on this important issue. I spent many hours with Al discussing the flooding problem and walking the park with Al. Al’s political agenda is very simple, he wants to build relationships with those people who will listen and be compassionate to residents in the park. If you have ever walked the park as I and many other members of the council have when the park is flooded, you will have a completely different perspective on what Al is fighting for.
When I first met Al, he didn’t trust me, and he didn’t trust the city. He heard lots of talk about helping the flooding issue for years, but he saw no results. Working with staff and the council, we started to come up with real solutions to help the flooding issue. Fortunately, we came up with a temporary fix, knowing this was a regional problem that needed a regional solution.
Al is a fighter and someone you can really depend on for help. He is well respected in the industry. But most importantly, I know from personal experience he is a compassionate man and loves his mobile home park. I do know his only plans are to keep the park in his family for years to come.
I realize people are zealous for candidates but let’s not judge other peoples’ motives and make innocent people casualties of politics.

The author of the letter fails to address the two questions (not allegations) I asked each of these two candidates (Hale and Galisatus) who both accepted a $2,500 donation from a mobile park owner and a $1,000 donation from a PAC representing mobile park owners. Both of these candidates are new to the political scene and had no prior relationship with the park owner or PAC.
I raised legitimate questions directed at two candidates, which is my right as a citizen and enabled by campaign finance laws that ensure the transparency of large donations. These public disclosure laws ensure that government and elected officials should represent the interests of all people, not just those with financial means to influence policy. There is a very good reason why campaign donations above $1,000 are immediately accessible to the public -- it’s so we can ask these very exact questions of our candidates. And remarkably, there is no mention that Mr Engels admitted in a letter that the donations were intended to “establish access with elected officials”. Say what?
So my questions remain:
1. Why did candidates Hale and Galisatus accept $2,500 checks of this significance from the owners of the Harbor Village Mobile Park and $1,000 checks from a mobile home park when they have no history with either of these entities?
2. And why did the mobile park owners seek out these two candidates?
