At the Feb. 3 presentation of the Vision Framework for the Broadway Specific Plan to the City Council at a planning session, many ideas were presented for improving the Broadway corridor, which is bordered by El Camino Real to the west, California Drive to the east, Lincoln Avenue to the north and Carmelita Avenue to the south.
Here are several of those ideas:
• Replace the Chevron gas station and the A&A Gas & Mart at the intersection of Broadway and California Drive with multistory housing;
• Widen the sidewalks on Broadway between El Camino Real and California Drive by eliminating some or all parking spaces on the street;
• Install underground bollards at various intersections of Broadway that could be raised to block vehicular traffic for events such as farmers’ markets or street fairs.
There are several upcoming events at which local residents, business owners and property owners can learn more about the changes being considered for the area and give their feedback:
Recommended for you
• Feb. 23 pop-up at the Fresh Market, Park Road, 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
• Feb. 26 pop-up “on Broadway” (no specific block/intersection/location given), noon-2 p.m.
• Feb. 26 community workshop at the Community Center, Elm Room, 6-8 p.m.
If you live, work, run a business, or own property in the Broadway Corridor, I strongly encourage you to attend one of these events to make your opinion known because if this plan is ever implemented it will have a great impact on your day-to-day life both during construction and beyond.
