I totally agree with this statement: “San Mateo community members want to dredge Marina Lagoon amid rising concerns.”
So many neighbors had property damage due to the flooding. I understand the city has an emergency fund that could cover dredging of the flood basin, cleaning out the coverts and increasing the storm drain capacity. We’re in an emergency situation. More heavy rains are forecast for this winter. The city cannot continue to kick the can down the road. Dredging needs to begin now.
The reserves are over $100M. The previously allotted funds were redirected to another emergency project. These reserves are the best opportunity to insure public safety and no future law suits. Some citizens have over $200,000 in damage to their homes. Citizens are living in fear of future damages. The dredging can be be broken into phases which is much easier to address.
Just received in the mail the postcard entitled "Community & Storm Protection Initiative." Cost to each homeowner will be $8/month if voted in. What happened to the idea of using the reserves? see www.cityofsanmateo.org/stormwater.
