Editor,
I remember two of my former patients. One was trying to start a local business. There were 12 agencies he had to go through. He went to Texas and was met by the local mayor.
When he asked what he needed to do to start a business he was told “just bring it.”
“If you are bringing us jobs we will make it happen.” I now get postcards from Texas. Another patient had a small local plastic company. He was told he needed a system to collect the rainwater coming off the roof. Although he told them he was not making the plastics outside the building they insisted and the cost would have been exorbitant. He is now making plastics in Nevada.
California is now ranked last in opportunity. The only people who may see California as the land of opportunity are the homeless and those seeking a welfare check. In almost every measure of how well a state is run we fall into the bottom third. And now our Democratic controlled Legislature is floundering around trying to make the state more affordable.
Speaker Robert Rivas says “we must chart a new path.” Hey Bob, we are where we are because of the path you have taken. Nobody at the state level wants to take any responsibility for the mess they created.
Why not start by looking at the top 10 states in governmental efficiency and see how they do it. More committees are not the answer.

Thanks for your letter, Dr. Howard, describing decisions by former patients. I know there are plenty more that have the same story. Voters get the government they vote for and apparently, voters in California are okay with being ranked last in opportunity. Until there’s a change, expect California to remain last in opportunity while more entrepreneurs move eastward to pursue their opportunity, and fortunes.
Brind back Musk to DOGE California -- before it's too late. When I study the economic and political cycles, it's obvious we're headed for hard times. California being in this mess will only make those times harder for all.
Thank you Dr. Howard for your letter. California is becoming a failed EU socialist state and it better wake up before it does. No wonder about 40% of Gov Newsome's top five donors come from public sectors Unions and others feeding at the public trough at the expense of its citizens.
