My July 18 letter to the San Mateo Daily Journal pointed out Joe Biden’s hypocrisy. While Biden admonished Americans to lower the temperature of political rhetoric, he never apologized for calling Trump’s followers “semifascists” and likening Trump to Hitler. My letter was criticized by Mr. Irv Brenner (July 22) but instead of criticism, this letter writer gave credence to my point. Brenner himself asserts that Biden’s depictions of Trump and his followers are indeed, true. As a logical extension, one would assume Brenner would have been filled with joy if “Trump- Hitler” had been murdered, and one would assume Brenner is now filled with dismay that the assassination attempt failed (If I believed, as Brenner does, namely that “the threat to our democracy, our freedom, and our nation” had been eliminated, I too, would have rejoiced at the murder of Trump).
Violent political rhetoric needs to be toned down by both sides. No doubt about that. However, the point of my letter was that Biden, while admonishing everybody else to tone down their rhetoric, should have taken responsibility and apologized for his own words. That he did not, was hypocrisy. And because of this nasty rhetoric and this vile hypocrisy, normal American citizens, like Mr. Brenner, likely find themselves wishing for the assassination of political opponents. That is not healthy for the future of America.
A convicted criminal like Trump is the perfect cult leader for Republicans, who can’t win anything without lying and cheating, with the help of fake religiosity.
Well said, Mr. Abramson. Notice that the violent political rhetoric from Dems lasted what, a minute, if even that long, after the assassination attempt? This is not healthy for America but it’s apparent that Trump Derangement Syndrome has no cure. As such, expect violent political rhetoric to continue. The tipping point has been reached.
