My husband and I bought my house in San Carlos in 1959. Since he died in 1982, I have noticed Alameda traffic enforcement is gone. I miss motorcycle officer Cross and his radar gun. Now we are going outside San Carlos to bring in the same police that allowed Redwood City to become what it is. Have you been to downtown Redwood City on a Friday night? Teenagers are pushing each other in front of the theater there. I’m an old lady, I won’t live like that. I love the safety of our downtown.
Now the council has decided to join in a city-to-city relationship like the fire department has with Belmont. Didn’t you just disband the fire department relationship with Belmont because it was not working? I am not happy with the idea of firing all of our good cops and bringing in Redwood City police.
At least the sheriff deputies will be given sergeants and a captain to stay on top of all this change. You need good supervision in this kind of work. The proposal from Redwood City police has no supervision in the plans, and we all know why: They must be the highest paid cops in the world. A captain and a secretary cost $468,516 a year? I can imagine how much three or four sergeants would cost. No wonder they don’t guarantee the retention of our cops. This is probably a way to solve their own problems.
If you have to disband our police department, at least replace it with something that gives us the same level of protection and supervision. I want to feel safe here, not get sold to the lowest bidder.
