Sam Avlakeotes, 70-year Redwood City resident, died May 29, 2018, surrounded by his family.
He was 87.
Sam was first generation Greek born in South Boston, Massachusetts, (“Southey”), and he was proud of it. From childhood, he loved baseball and poured that love for the game into his own children as they grew up. He worked 35 years for the U.S. Postal Service ultimately as director of Postal Operations in Redwood City and was also a journeyman stone mason.
Sam enjoyed traveling with his wife, Linda, and was an avid Bay Area sports fan particularly the A’s, Giants and Warriors and it wasn’t unusual to have them all on at once.
He will be lovingly remembered for his wit, his smile and incredible Greek cooking and hospitality.
He is survived by his wife Linda, and children Cooky Avlakeotes Wall (Robert), Scott (Joyce), Brad (Betty) and Bret (Eve) as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Tina Flynn, and his brothers Atha, Pano and Alex.
A celebration of his life is 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, Crippen and Flynn, 400 Woodside Road, Redwood City.
