Horace David "Joe" Brown, born in San Francisco in 1911, a fourth generation native of San Francisco, died suddenly and unexpectedly of heart failure at Mills Peninsula Hospital on Sept. 8, 2005.
He was a longtime resident of San Mateo, a loving husband of Mariellen Barnes Brown for 25 years, stepfather of Barbara Barnes Chittenden, Grandpa Horace to Jason Catlin and his wife Angie, Kim Chittenden and Christine Chittenden Price and Great-Grandpa "Horse" to Riley Price. He was Uncle Joe to Alex, David, Charlie, Jon Brown and their wives and Aimee Brown Taylor and Jeff, Donald Moore and great-uncle to 16 nieces and nephews. He was the patriarch of the Brown family.
After high school in Los Gatos he attended San Mateo Jr. College where he was a member of the 1928 championship soccer team. As "Board Marker" in 1929, he witnessed first hand the market crash of 1929. He spent several summers as an ordinary seaman on cruises that took him to Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines. His public accounting career covered 1939 to 1942 when was commissioned into the Army Air Corp, retiring in 1946 as a section chief in the Western Procurement District of the AMC with the rank of Major.
Horace joined Pacific Telephone after his military service and headed the Internal Audit Division. He retired in 1973 as General Tax Accountant and manager of the Tax Department. Following his retirement he volunteered as a tutor in accounting at San Mateo College for 10 years. He was a member of the American Certified Public Accountants, member and past president of the San Francisco Chapter of the Tax Executives Institute, a 50-plus year member of the Olympic Club, Lakeside, a life member of San Mateo Elks Lodge #1112 and life member of the Telephone Pioneers, member of SIRS 142, active member of the San Mateo County Historical Association.
He was active in the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew where he served as president of the Men's Club and head usher for many years.
He will be well remembered as a very active 94-year-old who appeared much younger than his age and truly enjoyed life. He will be sorely missed by the people whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Mateo County Historical Association or the charity of your choice.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo.
