Dorothy Jane Scanlan
April 1, 1919 – January 7, 2019
Burlingame, CA
Mother of Diana Marie White (husband Ed), Daniel Robert Scanlan (wife Marci), and Anne Scanlan-Rohrer (husband Scot); grandmother to James Joseph (wife Ralina), Christine Isborn (husband Arnold Kim); and Riley Scanlan; great-grandmother to T.J. Joseph, Naima Joseph, William Kim, and Joe Kim. Preceded in death by her husband Robert Mark Scanlan.
Born at Mills Hospital, San Mateo. Life-long resident of Burlingame. Graduated from McKinley Grammar School, Burlingame High School, and San Mateo Junior College.
Dorothy remained sharp and inquisitive until her final days. She was compassionate and fair, and an avid news follower with daily readings of two papers and many TV programs.
Everyone who met her loved her immediately. She made friends by waving out her kitchen window at people passing by and made neighborhood newcomers feel welcome. She loved cats, gardening, and her family. She loved the smell and feel of the surf spray outside her favorite restaurant, Nick’s of Rockaway Beach.
Dorothy stayed at home to always be there for her kids. She never drove a car, taking her kids via bus to their destinations. She never thought twice about depriving herself, but she always thought first about her kids, and this never changed throughout her life. Dorothy’s grandkids gave her a special joy, each treasuring their special moments with each other.
The family would like to thank those who have been especially helpful including extended family, close neighbors, and devoted caregivers.
Memorial donations may be made to the Peninsula Humane Society or Mission Hospice. A private celebration of life will be held later in the spring.
